Democracy Now! Is the Award-Winning, Independent TV/ Radio News Hour that has been broadcasting award-winning, independent news since 1996. Democracy Now! combines the cutting edge of a breaking news program with a magazine format that allows for extended discussions and debates.

Democracy Now! is hosted by Amy Goodman, one of America’s leading broadcast journalists. Goodman’s investigative reporting has won many of the industry’s top honors, including the George Polk Award, the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting and the Alfred I. duPont Columbia Award. Most recently Goodman was awarded the Gracie Allen Individual Achievement Award for Outstanding Program Host and the James Aronson Career Achievement Award. Co host Juan Gonzalez is one of the premier print journalists in the country. An award winning columnist for the New York Daily News, he was also 2004 President of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.

“Democracy Now! Retains a jagged and intriguing edge,” says the Washington Post. The show presents a diversity of voices not often heard on other U.S. media, including independent and international journalists, ordinary people affected by government policy, grassroots leaders, and independent analysts. Energetic debates extend beyond the traditional liberal/conservative exchange.

Award-winning mainstream journalists also regularly appear on the show. Featured guests in 2006 include journalists from domestic media such as The New York Times, Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, Newsweek, New Yorker, The Nation, and Vanity Fair; as well as from international print and broadcast outlets such as The Independent, Guardian (UK), and Ha’aretz, among others. The show also features regular reports from independent, un-embedded reporters on the ground bringing breaking news, such as Robert Fisk, Dahr Jamail, and Tariq Ali.

As a news show funded entirely through contributions from listeners, viewers, broadcasting stations and foundations, Democracy Now! maintains its editorial independence, providing a counterweight to media consolidation.
